2020 a year of firsts, including the first ever Varsity Soccer Game on the New Turf!!!! What a game, what a Stadium, what a beautiful field, what an atmosphere. Last night’s first ever game on the New Turf was electrifying! Fans from east and west of the interstate packed into Arrowhead Stadium ( ok, only 2 guests per player and of course they were socially distant) for the opportunity to say, “I was there the night it all began”. With field temperatures in the mid 70’s the mighty Chiefs wasted no time establishing their dominance over the Bears. Ashton Messina carved through the opposition slicing the ball to Ricky Emelian in the 6th minute for what would prove to be one of many. Emelian returned the favor to Chandler McCraight moments later for a 2-0 lead. Messina once again assisted Emelian minutes before Alex Davenport assisted Emelian. Davenport then immediately after assisted Shane Gill on his second of the season. The Bears popped one in sending the game 5-1 into halftime. The powerful, strong, fast, relentless, tough, skilled, calm, Brendan Pasut, not only controlled everything all night for the Chiefs but added two assists to Emelian’s 4th and 5th goals. As players Hayden Stanczyk and Alec Richardson were working tirelessly in wing back positions, Noah Kilmark, Nhat Vu, Drew Slane, and Griffin Cholette were improving their soccer style with every touch of the ball. Up 7-1 the Chiefs decided to bring returning goal keeper and 3x all state wrestler, Cody Brenner, to the front line for a punch of speed, size and strength. With the new adjustments, a series of more firsts were set in motion. Football stand out, Chase Molnar, stole the ball in Huron’s end and went on a 70 yard run, holding players off just as if he was running with a football tucked under his arm. It seemed as if at one point the opponents were trying to tackle him as he eventually scored the solo goal. Fellow footballer, Nhat Vu, was the other huge story. Replacing Brenner between the pipes, Vu, first time ever in goal, embraced the position without the use of gloves. Teammates of Vu were amazed at his cat like reflexes and his magnetic hands. Assistant coach Adam Brenner was even quoted , “is this kid for real?” The Bears were fortunate to score against Vu despite his upper corner dive that resembled that of a majestic eagle rather than that of a human athlete. Davenport got the Chiefs going again when he assisted Emelian’s 13th point of the game, setting a school record for 6 goals and an assist. Tyler Toth continued to work trying to score his first ever goal at the varsity level after being the leading scorer a year ago on jv. Freshmen Andrew Traster ended the game after scoring the 10th goal.
Special thanks to Mike Russell for being the announcer and amazing time keeper. Mike Russell is also the man who made us all ponder the deep life question, what is green and fuzzy and if it fell out of a tree it would kill you?
Answer: you will have to wait until the next game report
