Girls Varsity Soccer District Semi Final Against Riverview
1 year ago | Matt Lividini
Lose: 1 - 2
Gabby Emelian, back from a long time off, created the 1st goal from nothing.  The lead didn't last long when Riverview tied the game from the pk spot.  Riley Humeniak made some beautiful saves that kept the attacking Chiefs in control.  1-1 was the score forcing the game into overtime. 1 minute into the overtime Riverview scored off a corner kick that held up to be the game winner. 2-1 was the final sending the Chiefs home for the season.  An overall amazing season for a group of girls who were mostly playing jv a year ago.  Way to go Chiefs!

Chiefs Soccer Advances to District Semi Final

Win: 8 - 0
First game of Districts saw the Titans of Southgate take on the Chiefs.  All four grade levels were represented on the scoring card with 2 freshmen, a sophomore, 2 juniors and a senior all scoring. Freshmen Maggie Mentzer and Ava Banko both scored.  Sophomore, and leading goal scorer, Rylie Cassette, added two goals. Junior Kendyl Sikorski added two goals followed by junior Maggie Warden’s goal.  Senior Mira Lazenby represented the class of 2023 with a goal.  Assists were credited to Addison Dolencic, Hannah Purcell, Melissa Mentzer, Breeann Roupe, Kendyl Sikorski and Addison Bozynski.  GK  Riley Humeniak was credited with another shutout and got to see the field for sixteen seconds as a forward in the 2nd half before Warden scored the goal that completed the shutout.  Back in action Tuesday 5/30 at home in the district semi-final

When the Chiefs and Pirates met the 1st time, the Pirates came away as the victors.  That result left many feeling the better team had not won.  However, the Pirates were out to prove they deserved the 1st win and would claim the 2nd as well.  Despite a close action packed game, the Pirates did as they planned and out scored the Chiefs 3-0 and became the only Huron league team to hand the Chiefs 2 losses.  What does this mean for the Chiefs?  Probably a 4th place finish in the Huron league and a bit of uncertainty facing the Pirates in the semifinal of the District Tournament.  Come see how the Chiefs respond in the District Tournament as the defending District Champions (Chiefs) host the tournament at Arrowhead beginning Wednesday May 24th against the Titans of Southgate.
Girls Varsity Soccer Rematch With Grosse Ile

Lose: 1 - 1
Second game of Round Robin action and the Chiefs battled hard again.  80 minutes of playing in the heat had Grosse Ile and Huron settle for a tie.  Twenty minutes into the game Melissa Mentzer was taken down in the box and eventually credited with the assist when cool headed freshmen, Ava Banko upper cornered the pk. Still in the 1st half, Grosse Ile pressured a turnover and tied the game at 1-1.  Second half action was more grind and grit which doesn't favor Huron's style.  All 18 Chiefs worked hard and are still planning for the District tournament.  The Chiefs plan on celebrating Prom tomorrow and getting back after it on Monday against Riverview.
Soccer in Milan Or Milan?

Good morning, Milan Italy is a beautiful city in Italy where the culture is rich and the scenery is breathtaking.  There, soccer is not just a sport it is a way of life.  On Monday May 8th, a little piece of that spirit was reflected in Milan Michigan.   #1 Milan was hosting #4 Huron in the Round Robin Huron Tournament.  Both teams spent some time feeling each other out as both had a lot on the line.  Milan, undefeated in league play, was down 2-1 to the Chiefs a week ago but was able to score late handing the Chiefs the loss.  The Chiefs, knowing they could beat Milan, wanted to cross all their T’s and dot all their I’s to beat the host team.  A lot of defensive work from Addison Dolencic, Lily Cholette, Callie Eaton, Maggie Warden, Molly Johnston and Hannah Purcell helped Riley Humeniak keep the ball out of the Chief’s goal.  0-0 was the halftime score as the strong midfield play from the Chiefs started to put them in control of the match.  Freshmen Maggie Mentzer and Ava Banko threw themselves at everything to help generate not only control of the ball but also establish a sense of aggressiveness.   Huron’s youngest player, Shaylyn Carpenter, alongside Melissa Mentzer worked tirelessly in the middle as well. Breeann Roupe, Mira Lazenby, Ava Plackowski and Addison Bozynski all worked up and back to help brake Milan down on the outsides.  Rylie Cassette, Kendyl Sikorski and Danica Lividini all pressured the Milan defense to create opportunities.  After much work and hitting the post herself, Cassette created the opportunity everyone was waiting for when she beat girls around the outside and centered the ball. Kendyl Sikorski wasted no time holding off her defender and blasting Cassette’s pass into the back of the net.  As the Chief’s fans chanted “VIVA HURON” and “BUONO CALCIO” the Chiefs continued to press and almost scored another late to try to steal the win.  Final outcome was 1-1 between these two teams playing “The Beautiful Sport”
Chiefs / Devils Soccer "Direct Free Kick Edition"

Lose: 2 - 2
After some great DJing on the bus ride over by SlayMaster49, the Varsity soccer team was ready to get after Grosse Ile for their 1st of 2 meetings in 2 weeks.  Huron scored 1st when Kendyl Sikorski brought the ball under control and found fellow forward Rylie Cassette who out dribbled two defenders and slotted the ball past the oncoming goalie.  Huron kept that lead going into halftime with strong defensive play from Lily Cholette, Callie Eaton, Maggie Warden, Molly Johnston, Hannah Purcell and Addison Dolencic.  Due to a mix up in the 3 half rule, and a super selfless act on the behalf of Dolencic, she was not able to play the last half of the night (so sorry Addison).  Second half action resumed and the Chiefs were a bit out of sorts.  Cassette needed a break so she sat for a while, no Dolencic and Maggie Mentzer had used up her 3 halves, probably all contributing factors as to  why something was just a bit off.  The Chiefs continued to battle but Grosse Ile was doing more attacking which kept midfielders Breeann Roupe, Mira Lazenby, Shaylyn Carpenter, Melissa Mentzer, Addison Bozynski and Ava Banko on their toes.  Grosse Ile ended up striking a direct free kick from distance that found its way into the top netting tying the game at 1-1.  Huron was trying different combinations up top since Gabby Emelian was still resting her ankle.  Danica Lividini gave Sikorski a breather and then the Chiefs utilized 2 younger players for some strength and speed.  Avery Turk and Nhi Vo each came in up top, however, Turk had to be subbed off to rest her ankle.  Vo, in only her 2nd showing at the varsity level, was part of a beautiful goal when she took the ball down the right side and crossed to Ava Plackowski who finished a one time volley and buried the ball in the back of the net.  Back on top 2-1, the Chiefs continued to battle and close out the game.  OHHHHHH NOOOOO, WHAT? A HAND BALL IN THE BOX, ARE WE SURE???? Unfortunately, yes, the ball had jumped up and bit one of the lady Chiefs like a Viper calculating its next prey.  Grosse Ile struck the PK but Riley Humeniak made the save YAY.  Oh yeah but the rebound went in, BOO.  so the final was 2-2
Girls Varsity Soccer vs. Jefferson Bears
2.0 years ago | Matt Lividini
Win: 13 - 0
Huron tried to play as respectfully as possible against the Bears but found it difficult to not play at an all out pace after dropping 3 games of their own over the last week and a half to all state ranked teams.  Huron tried to slow the game a bit but with 19 girls on the varsity bench, all who are go getters, it made it challenging to ask them to rein it in a bit.   13 goals were scored in all, Melissa Mentzer from Rylie Cassette to start everything off.  Kendyl Sikorski scored the next 2 both from Mira Lazenby.   Cassette went solo for the next just before Shaylyn Carpenter scored from Addison Dolencic.  Cassette had the next 2 assists, 1 to Ava Plackowski and the other to Danica Lividini for her first varsity goal.  Ava Banko scored then Maggie Warden added one.  Goalkeeper Riley Humeniak scored her 1st ever varsity goal moments before Lily Cholette scored her 2nd ever varsity goal which Breeann Roupe assisted.  Melissa Mentzer added her 2nd and Sikorski added one more to take her tallie to 3.
Girls Soccer: Starships fly against Jets
2.0 years ago | Matt Lividini
Win: 8 - 0
We know Jets were meant to fly but what about our Starships???????  We jumped in our Bussy Bus a Bus we rode that and we put on our Huron Uniform we own that.  We didn’t go to the beach, each went to the field.  We didn’t catch a wave, they, say, what they had to say and what they had to say is Huron showed up to play.  Our Chiefs were on the field, field, they love to play and the crowd were asking for more, more and don’t delay.  So the Chiefs didn’t delay and scored 8 quick ones and were able to get out of the cold rain early.  Rylie Cassette scored 2 early, 1 from Ava Plackowski followed by 1 from  Melissa Mentzer.  Maggie Mentzer scored from Hannah Purcell just before Maggie Warden scored from  Cassette.  Ava Banko assisted Shaylyn Carpenter and freshmen Avery Turk assisted Cassette for the hat trick, Turk went on to score her 1st and 2nd ever varsity goal  from Maggie Mentzer and Cassette.  By the end of the shutout there were, hands up to touch the sky because this Huron  Starship was meant to fly.

Another close one!  Milan scored first but Rylie Cassette tied the game right back up after Shaylyn Carpenter slid her the ball.  Everything was tied up 1-1 at half and the Chiefs then went to work.  Holding the ball, possessing, attacking, shifting and moving. Lily Cholette was starting the attacks out of the back despite being a bit injured while Maggie Warden and Callie Eaton shut Milan down.  The Mentzers, Melissa and Maggie, not sisters, barely acquaintances, controlled the middle just before the big story of the night.  Freshman Ava Banko scored the go ahead goal by bending a direct free kick in from about 20 yards out. What a goal and what away to start her high school scoring career with varsity.  Four freshmen played in the game, Banko, and  Mentzer as regulars and Nhi Vo and Avery Turk made their debuts.  Ultimately the Chiefs lost their lead and eventually the game off of some miscommunications but the score nor their record is detouring them from their goals!
Chief’s Soccer battles Notre Dame

Lose: 1 - 3
Huron traveled to Pontiac to battle another tough team.  At halftime the score was tied 0-0.  Early in the 2nd half, Notre Dame capitalized on a stolen ball that eventually made its way to the back post where the awaiting forward tucked it away to take the lead 1-0.  After a lot of defensive work to keep Notre Dame from scoring and some big saves by Riley Humeniak in net, the Chiefs evened the score.  There were eight minutes left and Addison Bozynski scored off a corner kick.  Tied 1-1 with minutes left, the Chiefs gave up a penalty kick going down 2-1.  Everyone pushed forward to try and tie the game again and were found a bit disconnected and a Notre Dame forward took the ball on a run and scored a 3rd goal in the last minute.
Chiefs Battle Shrine Knights

What a great morning for the Chiefs to make a quick trip up to Royal Oak to battle the returning D4 state champions.  After ten minutes of the Chiefs flexing a bit with consistent possession the chiefs decided to play all 19 players to strengthen the squad for future matches.  Maggie Warden and Callie Eaton controlled the back which allowed for Mira Lazenby and Addison Bozynski to put in some hard work on the outsides.  Five minutes before half and 0-0 looked like it would be the score going into halftime but a direct free kick found the back of the net leaving the Chiefs down 1-0.  Gabby Emelian and Rylie Cassette came back into the game second half and did some damage up top with Emelian heading a corner in from Shaylyn Carpenter.  1-1 for a bit until the Chiefs turned the ball over which left them victim to a long breakaway that the Knights converted.  Despite Emelian having another miss by inches and some other real close calls, the Chiefs graciously accepted the L and thanked the returning Champs for their hospitality.

The faces in this photo show a determination that needs to be admired!  Whether in practice or on the field, this group of 19 are working for a goal that many said is not possible during a rebuilding year after graduating 13 players.  Ask these girls if they care what the critics said. Ask these girls who out possessed the other team tonight, who outworked the other team tonight, who outshot who, who had a pass count in the hundreds, ask them who played soccer tonight.  Ask them who has their sites on a District Title, not their 2nd consecutive title but this team’s 1st.   “Losing hurts, it hurts all of us differently. However, these girls played soccer tonight and I am more than proud of the product they displayed tonight, they make soccer look fun, like you wish you were out there with them receiving their next pass.”  (Soccer Fan)  Riverview 3 Huron 2                                 Goals     assists Rylie Cassette    1              1 Gabby Emelian  1

Go, go, go, go, go, go, Go, Gabby, it’s your birthday….. We gon’ play soccer like it’s your birthday, and we gon’ sip some water like it’s your birthday and you know we don’t give it up cuz it’s your birthday!!!  Wow, sophomore Gabby Emelian celebrated her birthday with a seven point showing after pocketing her 1st ever varsity hat trick and an assist.  Rylie Cassette had another big night with 3 points.  Lily Cholette had a 3-point night as well with assist after assist after assist.  All 19 varsity players came to play later rather than earlier.  Cold, wet, hail and snow, not ideal circumstances, so who could really blame the Chiefs for taking so long to get rolling?  Maggie Warden tried to convince her back line that cold was just a state of mind and she led by example both defensively and on the scoring sheet with a goal and a crossbar.  Fellow defensemen Addison Dolencic, Molly Johnston, Hannah Purcell and Callie Eaton all braved the cold and went on threatening attacks with Eaton getting an assist.  Huron has 8 midfielders who all were able to sub in for one another with 4 of them tallying points.  Shaylyn Carpenter had 3 pts, Ava Plackowski scored her 1st ever varsity goal, Breeann Roupe had an assist and Maggie Mentzer added another goal to her resume.  Mira Lazenby, Melissa Mentzer, Ava Banko and Addison Bozynski all had near misses as their midfield units continued to become more dominant.  Up top Kendyl Sikorski and Danica Lividini each had opportunities that were just not meant to be.  Huron’s amazing Riley Humeniak nearly had her 2nd straight shutout.  She saved a penalty kick and then the rebound after the penalty kick and then the rebound after the rebound but unfortunately the right bounce got the ball across the line and so went the 2nd shut out but not Humeniak’s win.  Huron is 2-0 in league play and is one of the top teams in the Huron League with 16 goals for 1 against.                               Goals     Assists Gabby Emelain  3              1 Rylie Cassette    1              1 Maggie Mentzer 1 Maggie Warden 1 Lily Cholette                       3 Breeann Roupe                 1 Ava Plackowski  1 Shaylyn Carpenter 1        1 Calie Eaton                          1
HURON'S Varsity Soccer Dominates Flat Rock
2.0 years ago | Matt Lividini
Win: 8 - 0
Huron’s Lady Chiefs got back to action against Flat Rock last night winning 8-0 in just over 60 minutes.  Sophomore Riley Humeniak recorded her 1st ever shut out while sophomore Rylie Cassette went on an eight point scoring spree, 3 goals and 2 assists.  Sophomore Shaylyn Carpenter had a goal and an assist just before freshmen Maggie Mentzer scored her first ever varsity goal.  Junior Kendyl (who does have a last name) Sikorski, stole the ball from the opposing goalie and tucked it back into the net for a goal of her own.  Senior midfielder, Breeann Roupe, was credited with a second half goal as well as fellow midfielder, Melissa Mentzer, who had goal #8 and completed the shut out.  Sophomores Callie Eaton, Gabby Emelian and Addison Dolencic all added assists.  Great ball movement and awareness was the key to Huron’s success.  Junior Maggie Warden controlled the entire pitch from the center back position along with help from veteran defensemen Lily Cholette.

Fifteen minutes into the game and the score was 0-0, it was the next 20 that could’ve sent the brand new Chief squad spiraling out of control.  Four goals, all off of miscalculations or crazy plays, saw the Chiefs down 4-0 at half.  Sophomore forward Rylie Cassette and Junior Kendyl Sikorski both got to goal in the first half and narrowly missed.  Moving into halftime the Chiefs needed to avoid the looming danger of loosing their 1st game, at home, and by shut-out.  This would be a tall task by a team of 18 with 13 of them playing their first ever varsity game against a powerful Divine Child team who already were salivating over a chance to shutout the mighty Chiefs. At a minute and a half into the 2nd half the Chiefs gave up a penalty shot that was almost the nail in the coffin as they went down 5-0.  These Chiefs would not brake though!  Down 5-0 any other team would’ve fallen apart, been shut out, and sent home to lick their wounds.  Not these girls, they fought and started hanging with the more powerful Divine Child girls and held the rest of the game to a 0-0 tie.  Junior defensewoman, Maggie Warden, had a shot on goal that almost caused trouble as well as fellow junior, Lily Chollette.  Sikorski almost scored again late in the game as well as freshmen Maggie Mentzer, who drilled the crossbar off of a well calculated shot.  Sophomore goalkeeper Riley Humeniak used her giant “Hamburger Helpers” to catch and steer away anything that came near her and Junior Melissa Mentzer worked tirelessly with help from senior Mira Lazenby, junior Danica Lividini and freshmen Ava Banko. Sophomore  Shaylyn Carpenter controlled the middle while senior Breeann Roupe and sophomores Ava Plackowski and Addison Bozynski worked up and back on the outsides.  Sophomores Addison Dolencic, Callie Eaton and Molly Johnston held down the back line with help from junior Hannah Purcell.         Come see another tough one as the Chiefs tough Journey to the top continues on 4/5/23 at home 6:00 against Father Gabriel Richard HS
