The Varsity Chiefs earned their first win of the 2023 season in exciting fashion over the Milan Big Reds.  It was a tale of 2 halves.  The Chiefs were slow out of the gate, and they were behind 0-14 at halftime.  The 2nd half was a different story as they dominated the line of scrimmage.  They orchestrated a strong first drive which was capped off by a rushing touchdown by QB Micah Smith.  Andrew Traster kicked the PAT to make the score 7-14.  After a strong defensive stand, the Chiefs got the ball back and marched down the field again.  The final play of this drive saw Austin O'Dell score on a rushing touchdown.  Traster kicked another PAT making it 14-14.  After another strong drive by Huron, they were stopped on 4th down and the game was forced into overtime.  Milan had the first possession, and they were forced to settle for a field goal making the score 14-17.  On the first play from scrimmage for the Chiefs, Micah Smith found the end zone on a strong run to give Huron a 20-17 victory.  Micah Smith had 14 carries for 67 yards and 2 TD's.  He was 3-3 passing for 41 yards.  Austin O'Dell had 18 carries for 103 yards and a TD.  Ryan Anderson also contributed in the run game.  Anderson, Jacob Handyside and Jacob Furkas all had receptions.  The defense was led by strong performances from Brennan Caldwell (14 tackles), Micah Smith (15 tackles), Ryan Anderson (6 tackles and an interception), Drew Ladach (11 tackles), Dylan Hudkins (7 tackles, 3 pass breakups), Cam Grant (11 tackles) and A.J. Floyd (5 tackles).  The Varsity Chiefs (1-2 Overall; 1-1 Huron League) will look to build on their momentum when they face the Riverview Pirates on Friday, September 15 at 7pm.  The game is at home.  Go Chiefs!
