GROSSE ILE HIGH SCHOOL: 3
When the two top undefeated teams are going to battle, you better not blink or you might miss something. However; on a night like tonight when 3 of the 4 goals were from direct free kicks and the 4th being from a ricochet, you weren’t going to miss the goals but you might leave scratching your head and asking, “what just happened there?” Not kidding, this writer was there and he's still not sure what happened. During play, neither team had many shots on goal, neither team connected many passes or kept possession, neither team’s strategies looked to be dominating. Both teams covered every square inch of the field and fought hard to impose their own will on the other. Grosse Ile was outworking Huron in the first half and came out 2-0 because of a free kick and a ricochet. Senior goalkeeper, Braden Damiani had his best game to date, catching balls out of the air and attacking the top edge of the box. In the second half, Huron was pushing hard and forced Grosse Ile to repeatedly play the ball out of bounds. Huron was gaining momentum when Sophomore Owen Barnes won a foot race and controlled the ball, spinning away from his defender. The defender clipped Owen’s foot and went down while Owen began his attack forward. Instead of being awarded advantage, he was penalized, Grosse Ile received a direct free kick and converted. Moments later Senior speedster, Nick Clark II blazed his way down the field and was awarded a penalty shot from the dangerous “cleats up” keeper maneuver. Junior Captain, Ricky Emelian, literally tore a hole in the net when he struck the P.K.. Now coach has to email all his parents and ask them to once again reach into their pockets to help offset the cost of new nets. (Parents see attached email). Everything began to spiral out of control as both teams got heated and tempers flew. So many cards where given out that it would be easier to say who didn’t receive one, I’m pretty sure only the Huron Coach didn’t receive one. When all was said and done, the smoke cleared and it was all 40 players shaking hands, hugging and congratulating one another on a hard fought battle that Grosse Ile won 3-1. Outside backs Ashton Messina, Brendan Pasut, and Travis Russell were super tough tonight. Junior Keeper Cody Brenner and Senior Mackennon Dolencic limited all Grosse Ile’s attempts. Senior captains Sam Hughes and Jacob O’Neil along with Matisse Dornier-Duff, Jordan Comilla and Sophomore Chandler McCraight, worked hard to control the middle. Senior captains Brendan Robbins and Salvatore Marchionda, kept the Grosse Ile defense guessing the whole night. Huron now sits in second place in the Huron league and will be back in action soon.
