Saturday was a long day as the chiefs battled through seven teams to make it all the way to the championship game for the News Herald Tournament at Lincoln Park High School. The girls played their hearts out despite facing many challenges. Addison McFadden was out of town and couldn't attend the tournament, so we knew we would miss having her presence on the court. Madelyn Mrowca and Brianna Holbrook were both feeling sick but chose to stay and try playing through it.
Huron faced Gabriel Richard, Southgate and Edsel Ford in pool play and went undefeated at 6-0. We were playing very well coming into bracket play. The gold bracket had us face off with Garden City. The chiefs sailed through that game easily winning in two sets. We moved on to face Woodhaven next. We had a few struggles initially, but once we found our momentum we came up winning both sets. Huron then faced Trenton in the semi finals. It was a close game and both teams were comparable, but the chiefs pulled through with winning in 2 sets. We had a bit of a waiting game to see who we would face in the finals, which ended up being Riverview. The game went to three sets and was very competitive. Riverview took the first set, Huron powered through winning the second set, but we came up short losing the third set 15-13.
Our girls played so well throughout the day. Brooke Simone had a phenomenal day offensively, and there were games where we just kept feeding her the ball. Our defensive players kept us in every game and they really play well together. They always do, and our defense is tough to beat. Both middle hitters have come a long way this season. They were aggressive all day Saturday and it was nice to see them playing with such confidence. Madelyn Mrowca remained solid all day at the net. Cami Konarski stepped up having to play front and back row every game and did a great job holding her own. It was a huge team win. The day brought ups and downs and the girls did great with building each other up when needed. This team has come so very far this year and I couldn't be more proud of them.
Way to go Chiefs!!
