SHRINE CATHOLIC HS: 1
In a game that featured 67 shots and a dominant offensive barrage all night, it is hard to believe that the star of the game was the opponent's goalie. Shrine and New Boston-Belleville squared-off in a game at Lindell Ice Arena and the boys form NB-B were relentless in their offensive assault on Shrine. Goalie JJ Mandziuk stood on his head and was stellar and acrobatic as the puck came his way.
In the third period with the score 3-1, Mandziuk was injured and came out of the game. A standing ovation from Shrine supporters as well as from visiting New Boston-Belleville showed their appreciation of an athlete working hard and playing excellent for his team and school. Moments later, he refused to sit on the bench and asked to return to the net. What a great job by the boys from Shrine who worked tirelessly in the game and have persevered through a tough season. Way to go guy Knights.
For NB-B, the team improved to 7-8 on the season with the win. Defensively the team has improved with a more physical style of play, good headman passing and speed. A key play in the game was a diving poke check by Captain Zac Murray on a Shrine breakaway to thwart that scoring opportunity. Scoring for the United was Matthew Kosiba, Xavier Ryznar and Zac Hurd. Assists were by Ryznar, Kosiba, Cole McNulty, Evan Estes and Captain Cody Nill with two assists who was flying and led the team in shots. Ryan Mann earned the victory in net.
