Huron's 4th Quarter Scoring Spree- Helps Edge Out Grosse Ile

Game Date
Jan 9, 2020
Score
: 46
GROSSE ILE HIGH SCHOOL: 43

From one game to the next, the tides turned in our favor. We seen ourselves play an incredible 3 quarters to Riverview two days prior and slip in the 4th quarter for a loss. Tonight we found ourselves being the 4th quarter team and taking over for the win.

It was not our greatest performance of the season. We were slow and sloppy  and could not get anything going in the first three quarters. Grosse Ile had put a lot of pressure on Thomas the entire game, which left us scattering to find scoring opportunities. We forced a lot early, tried to do too much, and really fell out of sync with one another. We managed to get out scored in the first half 24-17. It was just a half of poor defense and poor execution. Courtney Balasz lead in the first half with 7 points and Izzy Pritt with 4. Hannah Petroski, Lexi Thomas, and Anna Atherton each added a basket.

We came out of half with a little more energy and focus. Balasz really stepped up this quarter along with Pritt. With so much pressure on Lexi along with her having to sit most of 3rd due to 4 fouls, these two really took control of the game this quarter. Pritt didn't score but she was able to control the tempo and create scoring opportunities for others. Balasz had 6 points in the third and Callahan and Thomas each added a basket. We didn't do a ton, but defensively we held them to 8 points, which cut our deficit to 5.

The fourth quarter I knew we had the potential to be the better team. You were sensing fatigue from Grosse Ile and we have been working very hard to build our endurance to be the fourth quarter team. Lexi Thomas really took the game over this quarter. Being a leader isn't about dominating its about taking advantage of opportunities when they are in front of you. She really forced some things early but took some of her miscues and capitalized on them late. The biggest play of the game and probably ultimately the turning point was a defensive charge she took, on a fast break with Grosse Ile. With four fouls its very easy to move and just give them the basket or contest the shot and get a cheap foul called. Charges are something we work on often, and to see it and execute it, is extremely hard to do. She was able to create a turnover and a huge one at that. After that, I momentum followed us. Pritt hit a huge 3 pointer. Balasz had 3 big points, Callahan added a basket, but Thomas got hot and hit some HUGE shots. She had 11 points in the fourth and we stole a victory with a final score of 46-43.

It was a much needed win for the group. Staying with in striking distance is important, it gives us a shot. Although it was not our best over all game, it was surely our best finish of the season. Proud of everyone who battled through till the end.

Hannah Petroski 2 points

Anna Atherton 2 points

Izzy Pritt 7 points

Faith Callahan 8 points

Courtney Balasz 12 points

Lexi Thomas 15 points
