RIVERVIEW COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL: 79
The game started off back and fourth. Both teams coming back from break looked a bit rusty. Couple turnovers and early missed layups by both teams. But once we found our bearings, our tempo and pace picked up. Huron took the lead in the first quarter 17-15. Thomas had 7 and lead the way. I though we pushed the ball well and efficiently and I think the biggest thing was we made some key shots. We missed some too, but we finished some that we in past games have not been able to do so.
Coming in to the second, not much changed. Our defensive pressure was ok but we are completed a half of basketball under 7 fouls. Which is much improved from games past. Our guards made some good decisions and we got to the free throw line ourselves. Shooting 6-9 from the charity stripe this half. Courtney Balasz had 5 this half and took the ball well to the hole, which is great to see from her. Callahan added 4, Belair added 4, Trombley knocked down a pair of free throws, and Leporowski hit for 2. All things considered, based off prior games, we played a solid first half. We were very pleased going into half time being down one 34-35.
Opening the third quarter things were a bit shaky. Our legs were tired and you could see it. Our pace changed, our tempo changed, we missed a multitude of easy layups right under the basket. Combine that with some forced passes and turnovers, it translates to easy buckets for them and huge missed opportunities for us. But even with our misques, our defense held them to the lowest scoring quarter of the game. Our offense just fell a little. Callahan had 5 in the third followed by a bucket from Atherton and Petroski, and a triple from Thomas.
The fourth quarter is where it the tides turned. Riverview has a bit of experience we don't have yet. One that we are building game by game, but they are a solid fourth quarter team and it showed. They amped up their pressure which resulted in poor decisions on our end. We simply just gave the ball away too much. Our legs gave, and we started playing defense sloppy, reaching and fouling. They shot 13 free throws in the fourth quarter alone. That simply can not happen. But their pressure both offensively and defensively never let up and it was one quarter too many for us this evening.
All in all, the score of 79-55 does not reflect the overall game. The ability to finish is a trait we are building toward, and we took a giant leap in the right direction this evening. I am proud of this team and the efforts they put forth. Things are heading in the right direction.
